Linnæus 1758 described Spondylus on page 690 in the 1758 book, "Systema naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis", originally placing the genus in the Testacea Linnæus, 1758.
