Lachner & Karnella 1980 described bifasciata on page 108 in their 1980 journal article, "Fishes of the Indo-Pacific genus Eviota with descriptions of eight new species (Teleostei: Gobiidae)", originally placing the species in the genus Eviota Jenkins, 1903.
