Randall & Hoese 1986 described marisrubri on page 23 in their 1986 journal article, "Revision of the groupers of the Indo-Pacific genus Plectropomus (Perciformes: Serranidae)", originally placing the subspecies in the Plectropomus pessuliferus (Fowler 1904).
