Fowler 1946 described ovatiformis on page 142 in the 1946 journal article, "A collection of fishes obtained in the Riu Kiu Islands by Captain Ernest R. Tinkham, A.U.S", originally placing the species in the genus Chromis Cuvier, 1814.
