Gawel & Woodland 1974 described uspi on page 859 in their 1974 journal article, "Siganus (Lo) uspi, a new species from Fiji; and a comparison with the nominal species S. vulpinus and S. unimaculatus", originally placing the species in the genus Siganus Forsskål, 1775.
