John E. Randall, Robert F. Myers, Michael N. Trevor, Scott R. and Jeanette L. Johnson, Satoshi Yoshii, and Brian D. Greene
Upeneus vittatus (Forskal, 1775). Red Sea (type local¬ity) and east coast of Africa to the Society and Mar¬quesas Islands. In the western Pacific from southern Japan to Queensland and New Caledonia. Uninten¬tionally introduced to the Hawaiian Islands. Typically found over silty sand or mud bottoms in protected waters to a depth of at least 100 m. Fig. 38.
Chaetodon tidae (butterflyfishes)
Chaetodon burgessi Allen & Starck, 1973. Described from Palau; otherwise known from the East Indies, Caroline Islands, and Tonga. Reports of hybridization with C. flavocoronatus Myers and C. tinkeri Schultz in Tarawa (Allen et al., 1998). Specimen in Fig. 39 from Majuro differs from typical C. burgessi in the yellow pigment in the dark eye bar and some yellow in the outer part of the dorsal fin, suggesting genetic input from C. tinkeri (which is reported from Enewetak). The Johnsons have observed about a dozen individuals on the seaward reef from Kwajalein Island to Ennubuj in around 40 m, and varying from the nearly typical burgessi form to ones approaching tinkeri. BDG found them common at Kwajalein below 70 m. Fig. 39.

Hemitaurichthys thompsoni Fowler, 1923. Known only from islands of Oceania: Hawaiian Islands (type local¬ity) and Tuamotu Archipelago west to the Ogasawara Islands. Stanley C. Jazwinski collected a specimen at Taongi Atoll (BPBM 39295). Reported from the depth range of 10-114 m, usually in outer reef areas.
Heniochus singularis Smith & Radcliffe, 1911. Ranges from the Maldive Islands to the Caroline Islands, Tonga, and Samoa Islands. In the western Pacific from southern Japan to the Great Barrier Reef and New

Caledonia.Type locality, Luzon. A coral reef fish usually seen in pairs; in this reproduction of a frame from a videotape at Kwajalein, the fish to the right is Heniochus monoceros Cuvier. Fig. 40.
Pomacanthidae (angelfishes)
Apolemichthys griffisi (Carlson & Taylor, 1981). Distrib¬uted from Indonesia to the Phoenix Islands (type local¬ity, Kanton Island), Line and Caroline Islands. Reported from depths of 10-60 m, but usually found deeper than 30 m. Observed at Mili Atoll by SY and videotaped there by Craig Musburger; also videotaped at Kwajalein by SRJ. A subadult specimen collected from Kwajalein by BDG (BPBM 38923). Fig. 41.

Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus Burgess, 1973. Reported from the Line Islands (type locality,- Fanning Island, now Tabuaeran), Phoenix Islands, Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Nauru, and Kapingamarangi in the Caroline Islands. Seen at Mili Atoll by SY and video¬taped there by Craig Musburger. One collected at Majuro by BDG (BPBM 39522). Fig. 42.

Pomacentridae (damselfishes)
Pornacentrus nagasakiensis Tanaka, 1917. Described from Nagasaki, Japan; ranges south through the Indo¬Malayan region to the Great Barrier Reef, east to Palau, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia, west to Western Australia and Sri Lanka. Depth range, 3-35 m. Poma¬centrus arenarius Allen is a synonym (Alien, 1991). Fig. 43.
